St Mary's Catholic College is a comprehensive junior secondary school (Years 7-10) and meets the needs of families in the eastern region of Lake Macquarie. The school was founded in 1964 in the fine tradition of the Sisters of St Joseph, Lochinvar and has an established history as an excellent Catholic school.
The school recognises and respects the individuality and potential of all students. It strives to be a place of learning and growth, where students are nurtured, challenged, encouraged to excel and grow as wholesome people and responsible adults. It is a community where Christ's values find true expression, quality holistic education thrives and a strong sense of community prevails.
It is a caring, disciplined and safe community with a real and meaningful focus on a commitment to right relationships. This is supported by sound Behaviour Management Practices with a focus on the application of Positive Behaviour Support Practices, and Restorative Justice Principles. The school motto: "Ready to Serve" is given real and significant meaning in the daily life of the school.
Students are constantly challenged and encouraged to be other-centred and to exercise a social conscience. This is reflected in the presence and work of the Student Pastoral Council, the school's community care/outreach programs, the school's Junior Vinnies group and the most generous support of the whole community for fundraising activities in support of the Catholic Church's Missionary endeavours and those of other charitable organisations and causes.
The school is committed to raising students' awareness to the need to be actively involved in caring for our earth. The school is a registered Landcare group and students are actively engaged in planting native vegetation, preparing and caring for native gardens, collecting seeds and germinating seeds in a greenhouse, supporting the regeneration of native plants, assisting in the care of a vegetable garden, and rejuvenating a water course flowing through the school.
The school's focus on holistic education and commitment to inclusivity is expressed in the provision of a curriculum and associated extra-curricula activities catering for a diversity of students' gifts, talents, abilities and interests. In practical terms, this is demonstrated in the provision of a rich range of Additional Courses of Study; a flexible approach to offering these courses; wonderful opportunities for students to participate in the Creative and Performing Arts; a plethora of sporting opportunities; involvement in the National Science & Engineering Challenge; the integration of digital technology in the teaching/learning process; the availability of Vocational Education and Training Courses; the availability of a Learning Support Centre and a team of educators to support students with special needs and well developed links to our associated senior college, where our students achieve to the highest standards of scholastic excellence in the HSC.
