Students, staff and leaders gathered at Sacred Heart Cathedral to formally launch Catholic Schools Week 2026 and celebrate the gift of education and the communities that bring this to life. It was an occasion that showcased the remarkable breadth and diversity of our Catholic Schools community.
From the coastal communities of Newcastle, Stockton and Lake Macquarie, to the vibrant centres of Maitland, the Hunter Valley and Port Stephens; from the rural heartlands of the Upper Hunter to the far-reaching regions of Morisset and the Manning, our schools span a rich and varied landscape. Each community brings its own story, its own strengths, and its own distinctive expression of the Catholic tradition.
Amongst this, lies a shared mission that unites our people: a commitment to nurturing faith, fostering learning, and forming young people who bring hope and compassion into the world. Gathering for this celebration provided an opportunity to acknowledge and give thanks for all those who contribute to our schools.
At the heart of this year’s celebration is the theme, “A Home for All.” This theme invites deep reflection on how our Church and by extension, our schools are places of welcome, belonging and inclusion. In God’s house, there is always room at the table. Inspired by the example of Jesus, Catholic schools are called to be tireless in their hospitality, their care for one another, and their commitment to building the Kingdom of God here and now. This is the enduring spirit of Catholic education.
‘A Home for All’
With this year’s theme speaking to how does one create a welcoming environment, the liturgical celebrations provided space for this theme to be creatively expressed by:
- Students who brought the interactive installation of the 2026 theme to life, encouraging them to consider what it means to belong and create welcoming spaces within their community.
- Dancers from ASPIRE who presented a moving artistic performance that invited attendees to join in the spirit of prayer and reflection.
- A Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr Greg Barker VG, who brought together the Catholic Schools community in a profound expression of unity.
Together students, staff and leaders offered their praise and thanksgiving for the gift of Catholic schools and the role they play in shaping lives and communities.
The unity of Catholic Schools was evident in this shared liturgy, celebrating not only the launch of Catholic Schools Week 2026 but also served as a moment of renewal to inspire those in attendance to carry their appreciation of Catholic education back into their school communities.
Throughout Catholic Schools Week (18-22 May), Catholic Schools will continue to share in the spirit of connection and celebration as each school brings the celebration to their community. Catholic Schools Week is a meaningful reminder that our schools are more than places of learning – they are communities of faith, hope and love open to all.
