Environmental Sustainability

Care for creation is an important principle within Catholic teaching. Inspired by the messages of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ to care for our common home, we recognise the urgency of addressing climate change and are committed to making progress in this space through our 2022 – 2025 Diocesan Sustainability Plan.

We are working towards being a leader in this space and are actively supporting the transition to a more sustainable future in our region. Please see some of the Diocesan initiatives below;

  • From 1 July 2023, all Diocesan sites – including 59 schools – have been powered by GreenPower, meaning they now operate on 100% clean, renewable energy.

  • Close to 90% of eligible Diocesan sites have solar panels installed, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.
  • We’ve implemented a school holiday energy reduction program where schools power down all non-essential equipment – such as printers, smartboards and computer monitors – over the break. This simple measure led to an average 15% energy reduction across our schools during the summer holidays.
  • Our “Tiny Forest” initiative has been introduced in several schools to increase urban biodiversity. These compact, densely planted ecosystems are not only great for the environment but also serve as a valuable educational tool for students.
  • With a focus on measurable outcomes in our next Sustainability Plan, we will be able to establish baseline data, allowing us to set meaningful targets and monitor progress to support evolving government reporting requirements.
  • Sustainability is also a priority in our education programs, extending from early learning through to secondary schooling, and into the broader communities we work within.

Tiny Forest

Originating in Japan in the 1970s, Tiny Forests are created to increase biodiversity in urban spaces by mimicking natural ecosystems. Made up of concentrated planting that spans the size of a tennis court, they provide numerous environmental and social benefits that create long-term impact.
