Students from Catholic Schools Maitland-Newcastle’s Virtual Academy stepped into the shoes of world leaders recently, gathering at the University of Newcastle’s NUspace campus for the highly anticipated G20 Summit 2026.
Bringing together Perspective Unit students from across the Diocese, the summit challenged participants to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues through the lens of international diplomacy and collaboration.
Assuming the roles of leaders representing their own G20 nations, students engaged in sophisticated discussions and negotiations focused on global challenges including artificial intelligence, energy security and poverty. Through a combination of nation presentations, diplomatic forums and collaborative problem-solving activities, students explored the complexities of policymaking on a global stage.
The immersive learning experience provided students with an authentic opportunity to develop and demonstrate critical thinking, communication and leadership skills while gaining a deeper understanding of international relations and contemporary global issues.
Throughout the day, students worked together to build consensus, navigate differing perspectives and negotiate practical solutions to shared challenges. Their efforts culminated in the development of a united G20 Communiqué, reflecting the collective priorities and commitments agreed upon by the student delegates.
The summit highlighted the strength of inquiry-based learning within the Virtual Academy, providing students with a real-world context in which to apply their knowledge and skills. It also showcased the capacity of young people to engage thoughtfully with complex issues and contribute meaningfully to discussions about the future.
By fostering collaboration, global awareness and civic responsibility, the G20 Summit 2026 offered students a powerful reminder that today’s learners have the potential to become tomorrow’s leaders.
“The summit was an outstanding example of authentic learning in action,” said Virtual Academy staff. “Students embraced the opportunity to think critically, negotiate respectfully and work collaboratively to address challenges that impact communities around the world. The quality of discussion and leadership on display was truly impressive.”
