Lisa Eaton has been a driving force behind the transformation of the Life Skills Program at St Dominic’s Catholic College in Mayfield. Her innovative approach has not only enhanced the educational experience for students with a range of disabilities but has also earned her the prestigious Emmaus Award for Innovation.
One standout initiative is the Food Technology Program, St Dominic’s Café Club and St Dominic’s Bites Canteen. These programs aren’t your typical classroom activities. Students roll up their sleeves to plan menus, prepare meals, serve customers, manage budgets, and even handle marketing. It’s real-world learning at its best, fostering independence, confidence, and a strong sense of community. The program has become a cherished part of the school environment.
Lisa has also been instrumental in the Work in Communities and Community Access Programs, providing students with hands-on work experience in local businesses. Whether it’s sorting retail items, delivering flyers, or caring for pets, these tasks help students develop essential skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Many have even transitioned into post-school day programs, a testament to the lasting impact of these experiences that Lisa has led.
Lisa’s passion and ingenuity have not only enriched the lives of her students but have also fostered greater collaboration among staff, students, and the local community. It’s no wonder she was honoured with the Emmaus Award for Innovation, recognising her outstanding contribution to education.
Her efforts are a shining example of how one person’s dedication can make a world of difference.
