A Journey Through Time
St Joseph’s Wingham Commemorates 90 Years of Faith and Learning
The day began with Principal, Mrs Melissa Hunt, honouring the Sisters of St Joseph who in 1935, opened the school doors with 83 students. Mrs Hunt spoke of how the school has evolved over time and reflected on our current community.
“St Joseph’s Wingham is a vibrant and faith-filled community. You only need to walk through the gates to feel how special this school is. Together with our families, we walk hand in hand in the Catholic education of their children.”
“Our school has grown and evolved, yet our commitment to providing a holistic education rooted in Catholic principles remains steadfast.”
Mrs Hunt then went on to welcome special guests including Director of Schools Jacqueline Wilkinson, Parish Priest; Father Kevin Corrigan, past principals; Mr Justin Hutchens and Mr Mark Mowbray, Finance Business Partner Narelle Taylor, Mrs Tenille Gardiner REC St Clare’s High School, past students Rory Byrne, Lewis Downie and Jake Guppy.
The school celebrated with a liturgy and the cutting of the celebration cake followed by open classrooms, where everyone saw the wonderful learning that takes place daily, viewed the fabulous new facilities and vibrant learning environments that the school is now home to.
Everyone enjoyed looking at past photos, finding their younger selves, relatives and familiar faces. School memorabilia was on display in the hall, along with the display of old school items that were kindly loaned by the Wingham Museum.
The community gathered for a picnic lunch before students participated in some old-fashioned games. Year 6 Students lead activities and took attendees back to a time when skipping rhymes, sack races, hopscotch and tunnel ball were popular novelty games.
Students loved being part of this new chapter in the school’s history. Mrs Hunt summed up the day with a prayer for our future
“My prayer for St Joseph’s is that this school continues to be a place where all children are valued, where they can grow in faith and achieve their best, and that the legacy of the Sisters of St Joseph continues well into the future.”
