The start of Term One is a significant milestone for every family, but especially for our Kindergarten and Year 7 families. These early weeks set the tone for the year ahead, shaping routines, creating friendships, building self-confidence, and forming a sense of belonging.
To support our families with settling into the new school year, here are five practical tips to set you up for success:
-
Create a calm morning routine: The first few weeks are all about consistency. By having a predictable start to the day, students arrive at school feeling settled and ready to learn. Build a checklist that incorporates all the key steps to arrive at school ready to learn. It might include: packing my bag, checking my timetable (for secondary students), having breakfast and preparing my uniform.
-
Learn the school route: Whether it’s a new route or the same as last year, getting familiar with the daily school commute can help everyone feel comfortable. This way, everyone involved knows where to go, what to do and where to find help. You might like to do a practice run, confirm the drop-off and pick-up locations, or, if using public transport, review the route together.
-
Establish healthy after-school habits: Start the year strong with some healthy habits. Create time blocks for various after-school activities, including recreation, relaxation, homework, screen-free time and other responsibilities.
-
Stay connected with your school: As routines and expectations are established and key information is shared for the year, make sure that you’re informed so that you can support your child throughout their schooling year. Subscribe to your school’s newsletter, turn on your Compass notifications and learn what are the key resources and communication channels used by your child’s teachers.
-
Prioritise friendships and social confidence: Term one is the time when students build their sense of belonging within the school environment. By arranging times for students to catch-up outside of school and engage with local community groups and activities, parents can support their child as they form these strong friendships. This will make school feel safe, enjoyable and meaningful.
Begin with confidence and care
