Throughout a child’s school journey, having a close-knit group of friends helps create a positive and supportive learning environment. When children feel connected both at home and among peers, they’re more likely to feel safe, confident, and empowered to ask for help when they need it.
In recognition of Mental Health Month and World Mental Health Day, The Rosewood Centre is offering thoughtful guidance for parents, carers, and children to nurture meaningful, lasting friendships – an essential pillar of emotional wellbeing.
These significant awareness-raising events serve as gentle reminders of the importance of prioritising mental health at every age. They encourage open conversations, reduce stigma, and highlight the need to create spaces where children feel seen, supported, and emotionally secure.
How to be a good friend:
Tips for primary students
- Be kind and respectful by using friendly words, including others, and avoiding put-downs.
- Take turns and share fairly – Whether in games, conversations, or group work, fairness strengthens trust.
- Listen and show interest – Paying attention when a friend talks, shows they matter.
- Help and stand up for each other – Offering support, or speaking up if a peer is treated unfairly, builds loyalty.
- Repair after conflict – Saying sorry, forgiving, and moving forward helps friendships last.
Tips for secondary students
- Be trustworthy – Keep promises, respect privacy, and avoid gossip.
- Show empathy – Try to understand how your friend feels, even if you don’t agree.
- Offer support – Be there during challenges, not just in fun times.
- Respect differences – Accept that friends may have different opinions, interests, or identities.
- Communicate openly – Share your thoughts, listen actively, and resolve conflicts calmly.
