Celebrating Ayla Williams: Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards Runner-Up

5th September, 2025

We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Ayla Williams from Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Tarro, who has been awarded Runner-up in the Upper Primary category of the prestigious Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards.

The national awards are Australia’s oldest and largest poetry competition for school students, encouraging young writers to explore language and creativity. Each year, the competition seeks to capture the imaginations of students across the country, inspiring them to express their thoughts and feelings through poetry in their pursuit of literary excellence.

This year, the competition received nearly 8,500 entries from over 5,800 students representing 660 schools nationwide.

Ayla’s recognition is an incredible achievement, showcasing her talent, creativity and dedication to the art of poetry. Her success also reflects the supportive learning environment fostered at Our Lady of Lourdes, where students are encouraged to explore their passions and share their voices. Her success was made even more special as her peers and family gathered together this morning to watch the official announcement, celebrating the moment as a community.

We warmly congratulate Ayla on this well-deserved achievement and look forward to seeing her continue to flourish as a young writer.
