At the 2026 Maitland-Newcastle Diocese Senior Boys Football Gala Day, one story stood above the results and scorelines – a story that perfectly captured the spirit of community, compassion and sportsmanship within Catholic education.
St Clare’s High School, Taree arrived at the gala day facing a significant challenge. With difficulties fielding a full squad in the lead up to the event, the team travelled to the venue with just eight players, determined to honour their commitment and participate despite the obstacles.
In an outstanding act of sportsmanship, Zac Elbourne, Keston Dowler and Ryan Louis from All Saints’ College, Maitland volunteered at short notice to travel to the venue and support St Clare’s throughout the day.
Their selfless actions quickly inspired others, with several students from competing schools also stepping forward to assist, ensuring St Clare’s could continue to participate fully in matches across the gala day.
The support shown throughout the competition was a powerful reminder that school sport is about far more than winning. Students from across the diocese demonstrated the true meaning of community through their kindness, inclusion and willingness to support one another.
While the football showcased skill and teamwork on the field, it was the character of the students off the field that left the greatest impression.
Moments like these continue to highlight how sport within the Maitland-Newcastle Diocese helps shape not only talented athletes, but also outstanding young people committed to caring for others and building strong communities.
