Emmaus Award Recognises Ryan Purkiss' Outstanding Contribution in His First Five Years of Teaching

19th June, 2026

As the recipient of an Emmaus Award for Excellence in the First Five Years of Teaching, Ryan Purkiss from St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm, is being recognised for his contribution to learning, wellbeing and the College community.

Since joining the Mathematics faculty in 2023, he has fostered student growth through strong pedagogical practice and engaging learning experiences. In 2024, Ryan taught a Standard 2 Mathematics class that achieved exceptional HSC results, including the school’s first Band 6 in the subject and the highest result across the Diocese.

Known for going above and beyond for his students, Ryan provides targeted support, meaningful feedback and opportunities for self-reflection that encourage students to take ownership of their learning. By building strong relationships with students and families, he creates an environment where students feel supported and confident to challenge themselves.

Beyond the classroom, Ryan contributes generously to the life of the College through co-curricular activities and his leadership as McAuley House Leader.

His dedication to academic growth, student wellbeing and community involvement reflects the positive influence early career teachers can have on their school communities. Through his work, Ryan continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of young people at St Bede’s.

We congratulate Ryan on his achievement.
