Karen Hickling from St Joseph’s College, Lochinvar has been recognised with the Excellence in Teaching: Secondary Emmaus Award, celebrating her outstanding commitment to Catholic education and the lasting impact she has on the lives of her students and colleagues.
Karen embodies the Josephite charism through her unwavering dedication to teaching and her deep commitment to nurturing the intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual growth of every student in her care. Throughout her career, she has consistently placed student learning and wellbeing at the centre of all she does.
Having served across St Joseph’s Aberdeen, All Saints’ College Lochinvar and Maitland, Karen returned to St Joseph’s College Lochinvar in 2017. As Student Coordinator and a founding Leader of Wellbeing and Engagement, she has played a significant role in shaping a culture built on care, inclusion and high expectations.
A highly respected Mathematics teacher, Karen teaches students across Years 7 to 12 as well as Mathematics Advanced. Her calm and supportive classrooms are places where students feel known, encouraged and challenged to achieve their best. She has a remarkable ability to recognise when students need additional support, responding with empathy, compassion and practical care that helps them build confidence and resilience.
Karen’s influence extends beyond the classroom. As a trusted colleague and leader, she is admired for her wisdom, generosity and faith-filled leadership, inspiring those around her through both her actions and example.
