Learning came to life for Stage 3 students at St Peter’s Primary School, Stockton at the end of last term as they stepped into history through their Federation unit.
As part of the Stage 3 History curriculum, students explored the events, ideas and key figures behind the Federation of Australia. Rather than simply learning about the past, students were challenged to experience it, researching influential figures and reimagining their stories through first-person monologues.
This learning culminated in a Living Museum, where classrooms transformed into immersive historical spaces. With the press of a ‘Start’ button, each student brought their chosen figure to life, sharing perspectives, passions and debates that shaped the nation.
Through carefully crafted costumes, props and interactive displays, students demonstrated not only a strong understanding of historical content, but an ability to communicate it in engaging and meaningful ways. From poetic interpretations to hands-on voting experiences, each presentation reflected deep thinking and creativity.
The result was more than an exhibition, it was a powerful example of curriculum in action. Students moved beyond recalling facts to embodying history, connecting with the people and ideas behind Federation in a way that was both memorable and authentic, all while teaching their younger peers the importance of Australian history.
For families and visitors, it was a chance to see learning in its most impactful form, alive, expressive and deeply understood.
