In May 2025, the Manning region of New South Wales was struck by unprecedented flooding.
The Manning River reached a record-breaking 6.4 metres, surpassing the previous 1929 record, and inundated towns such as Taree, Wingham, and Forster. The relentless rainfall and rising waters left over 48,000 residents isolated, with many homes rendered uninhabitable. In the face of this devastation, Catholic Schools Maitland- Newcastle Catholic Schools Diocese recognised
the emotional and spiritual toll the disaster had on the affected communities, we reached out to our schools, inviting them to share ‘Messages of Hope.’ This initiative aimed to provide solace, encouragement, and a reminder of the strength found in unity and faith.
The response was overwhelming. Over 200 heartfelt messages poured in from students, teachers, and school communities across the Diocese. Each message, whether a simple drawing, a prayer, or a written note, conveyed compassion, solidarity, and a shared commitment to rebuilding, healing and hope.
These messages were not just words; they were lifelines, offering emotional support and a sense of connection during a time of isolation and uncertainty.
