At the end of last term Students at St Brigid’s Primary School, Raymond Terrace, explored culture, creativity and connection during a special NAIDOC Week celebration, with a day of activities designed to immerse them in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, stories and traditions.
Across the day, students took part in a range of experiences including weaving, Torres Strait Islander dance, art, bush tucker, outdoor games, dance and Dreaming stories. Each session gave students the opportunity to learn through doing, while building a deeper understanding of culture and the richness of First Nations knowledge and traditions.
Adding to the day was the support of students from Catherine McAuley Catholic College, Medowie, who joined St Brigid’s and assisted with the weaving session. Their involvement brought an extra sense of community to the celebration, as older students shared their time and skills with younger learners.
Through experiences like these, St Brigid’s continues to create opportunities for students to learn with curiosity and respect, while deepening their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions.
It was a vibrant day of learning, listening and participation, with students given the chance to engage with culture in meaningful and memorable ways.
