NSWCCC Football 2025

Last week the Open Girls Soccer team competed at the NSWCCC championships held in Sydney. This year the team included a number of new players from across the Diocese.

The team had a great start to the tournament defeating SCS White combined Sydney Catholic school 4 -2.The second game was against a very strong Paramatta team, and this game was very close finishing in a 1 – 1 draw.

The team’s second day began on a high as they defeated a very strong SCS Orange combined Sydney Catholic Schools team. Despite a very tight game, the girls secured another win against a very skilful CGSSSA, winning 5 – 2, topping the pool and securing a place in the final.

The girls gave it their all against an undefeated Wollongong team, narrowly losing 1 – 0.

Congratulations the team for playing hard and showing great sportwomenship throughout the tournament.

Congratulations to Mayan Harkness from Adamstown, Sophie Howarth from Hamilton and Milla Dougherty from Medowie on their outstanding performances that saw them selected into the NSWCCC team.

The Maitland-Newcastle Diocese proudly fielded a representative senior boys’ football team at the 2025 NSWCCC Football Championships. The team of 15 proudly represented the Diocese led by Captain Charlie Cotton and Vice-Captain Lucas Miller.

Across four highly competitive matches, the Maitland-Newcastle boys secured an impressive three wins with a single loss. The team opened with a 1- 0 victory against Parramatta Blue, followed by a 2-1 win against Parramatta Gold.

In game number three, the team delivered an attacking masterclass, securing a 5 – 2 win against Southern Country. A standout of the match and tournament was forward Kai Thompson, whose brilliant hat-trick capped off a four-goal campaign. He was a constant threat and a vital force in attack.

Defensively, the side was anchored by goalkeeper Cayden Lobach, who produced several crucial saves across the championship. His composure and leadership were vital in securing the team’s three wins and keeping the side competitive in all fixtures.

Theo Law showed maturity and leadership beyond his years, emerging as a future leader for Maitland-Newcastle. His growth and natural talent throughout the tournament highlight his exciting potential.

In their final match, the team fell 5–1 to a strong Sydney Orange side, who advanced to the final, winning the tournament, and topping Pool A. Despite the result, the team showed resilience and teamwork throughout, finishing second in Pool B.

The squad can be proud of their efforts and how they represented the Diocese. With three 14-year-olds-Zac Zigic, Rhys Brown, and Payton Wheeler, gaining valuable experience, the future looks bright for CCC tournaments.

All players displayed sportsmanship of the highest order and demonstrated the values of commitment, respect, and teamwork both on and off the field. The performances and potential shown throughout the championships augur well for the future of Maitland-Newcastle Diocese football.
