Today, ground was officially broken at the site of Catherine McAuley Primary School in Medowie, marking a significant milestone for the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle and the growing Port Stephens community.
The new school will form part of the Medowie Catholic education precinct, alongside Catherine McAuley Catholic College and St Nicholas Early Education Centre, creating a connected Catholic education pathway designed to support families across the region.
Director of Catholic Schools, Jacqueline Wilkinson, said the sod turning celebrates the Diocese’s commitment to meeting the needs of a growing population and supporting families with more opportunities for Catholic education.
“Catherine McAuley Primary School, Medowie will provide students with a purpose-built, faith-filled learning environment where they can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually,” Ms Wilkinson said. “This project reflects our dedication to offering families access to high-quality Catholic education, supported by strong values and a deep sense of community.”
Construction is now underway, with Catherine McAuley Primary School scheduled to open its doors in 2027.
Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, Michael Kennedy, said the school honours the vision and values of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy.
“Catherine McAuley was a woman of faith and compassion whose service to those in need has left an enduring legacy,” Bishop Kennedy said. “Her values will guide the mission of this new school and inspire generations of students to learn and grow while making a positive difference.”
Once complete, the school will feature purpose-built, flexible learning spaces, landscaped outdoor areas, and modern facilities designed to nurture students’ creativity and wellbeing.
