St Bede's teacher shines in the spotlight on World Teachers' Day

30th October, 2026

The passion, dedication and lasting impact of teachers across Catholic Schools Maitland-Newcastle were celebrated on World Teachers’ Day, with St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm teacher Jason Heffernan featured in a special ABC NSW radio story.

ABC reporter Laurise Dickson visited Jason’s Year 8 Chinese classroom to see firsthand how his engaging and innovative approach to teaching is inspiring students to embrace languages.

Through interactive activities, technology and collaborative group work, Jason creates a dynamic learning environment that encourages students to participate, build confidence and develop new skills.

Having initially pursued studies in languages, translation and interpreting, Jason discovered his passion for education through the opportunity to share his knowledge and make a difference in young people’s lives.

During the interview, Jason reflected on the important role teachers play beyond academic learning, highlighting the value of building meaningful relationships, supporting student wellbeing and providing encouragement during the formative teenage years.

For Jason, one of the greatest rewards of teaching is watching students grow in confidence and ability, particularly those discovering a new language for the first time.

The radio feature provided a wonderful opportunity to recognise the dedicated teachers across our Catholic school communities who inspire, support and empower young people every day.
