Students across the regions have been busy with Cricket NSW School Smash Gala Days â a new sporting initiative between Cricket NSW and the Diocese.
Last month, Lower Hunter, Central and Lakes region students participated in modified cricket games, giving them plenty of opportunities to develop their skills, work as a team and enjoy friendly competition.
Lower Hunter students had fun with an inflatable catching drill as well as a catching challenge, with signed Sydney Sixers hats awarded as prizes. A highlight of their day was the visit from Sydney Sixers players Elsa Hunter and Harjas Singh, who generously spent time with students and participated in an engaging Q&A session.
Students learned about Elsa’s achievement as the youngest-ever senior international cricketer, as well as Harjas’ incredible batting innings of 314 runs in a one-day match, including 35 sixes. They enjoyed hearing about their cricket journeys, their favourite food and their taste in music.
Elsa and Harjas then got involved and played with the students. Their enthusiasm and willingness to connect with students was particularly impressive and undoubtedly left many students feeling inspired.
More recently, Stage 3 students from Catholic primary schools across the North Region took part in the Schools Smash Cricket Gala Day, hosted by the Sydney Sixers.
With a focus on maximum participation, every student had the chance to be involved, develop new skills and enjoy the excitement of the game. Even those with little or no prior experience playing cricket embraced the opportunity and had a fantastic day.
The sun was shining and the fields were filled with the sounds of cheering, laughter and encouragement as students enthusiastically rotated through the activities and games.
The Sydney Sixers staff, together with sport coaching students from Catherine McAuley Catholic College, played a vital role in making the day such a success. Their positive encouragement, enthusiasm and expert coaching helped students build confidence, improve their skills and enjoy every aspect of the event.
The partnership between Cricket NSW and the Diocese continues to provide students with valuable opportunities to develop sporting skills, teamwork and confidence through positive participation experiences.
