Diocesan Secondary Schools and Tennis NSW Initiative

22nd May, 2025

Tennis NSW, in conjunction with the local Catholic Schools Diocese of Maitland Newcastle have introduced an opportunity for students to participate in tennis within their weekly Friday secondary school sport program. This exciting new secondary school competition uses modified equipment, numeric scoring, and mixed gendered teams.

Socially and emotionally, tennis encourages teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. It fosters inclusion by accommodating players of all skill levels and promotes valuable life skills such as goal setting, time management, and stress relief. This program not only contributes to students’ health and well-being but also positively impacts their personal growth.

Pat Landy and Talor Hamilton met with Leader of Sport Bernadette Duggan to pilot this weekly Interschool League which is specifically designed for providing the opportunity for students who are interested in enhancing their tennis skills in a friendly and competitive setting. It is not just about selecting the best students, but encouraging participation for those who are interested and, providing a positive experience playing tennis, growing friendships, and giving students the opportunity to represent their school in a team environment.

Each week schools enter the ‘League Points’ score for each team which is then placed in the Competition Leaderboard which has a live link on the Diocesan sport website for everyone to view and see the results.
