Young Storytellers Find Their Voice at ASPIRE’s First Secondary Scriptwriters Day

26th February, 2026

On Monday, 24 secondary students participated in ASPIRE’s first Secondary Scriptwriters Day in Newcastle.

Students took part in workshops lead by novelist Amy Lovat and Playwrights Carl Caulfield and Vanessa Bates as they developed their understanding of story and character whilst discovering new ways of generating ideas and getting started on a script.

The thought-provoking day inspired students to find their creative voices and get writing. Schools represented were:

St Catherine’s Catholic College, Singleton, St Joseph’s College, Lochinvar, Trinity Catholic College, Adamstown, St Francis Xavier’s College, Hamilton, St Mary’s, Gateshead, All Saint College, Maitland and St Paul’s Catholic College, Booragul.

We look forward to reading the work this talented group produce with many planning to enter the Aspire scriptwriters’ competition as well as developing work to be performed at their school communities.
