Our School

St Joseph's Primary School, Charlestown aims to provide its students with a quality Catholic education by creating a learning community that promotes and models the Gospel values. We are proud of our Josephite tradition and we incorporate the charisms of the order into our daily school life.

St Joseph’s school is purpose-built to facilitate team teaching which allows teachers to work collaboratively in their planning and delivery of learning. Our unique bushland setting gives the students an opportunity to develop an awareness and an appreciation of the environment. We have spacious grounds affording many play areas and shady spots for a variety of activities.

At St Joseph's we are committed to ensuring every child is given the opportunity to achieve their very best within the classroom. The teaching staff works closely with parents to ensure individual needs can be met. The partnership between home and school is promoted and valued at our school as teachers see parents as the first educators. The integration of children with special needs is a particular focus within our school. Our Learning Support teacher, whose role is  to support children with special needs and their families is a wonderful resource in our school community.

St Joseph’s has a strong Anti Bullying culture and we work constantly to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students. We are a “Kidsmatter” school which means we actively promote daily initiatives that support the social and emotional wellbeing of all our students. This also means supporting parents in their role as educators by providing regular parent information evenings on relevant topics such as: Cybersafety, Dealing with Anxiety in Children and Understanding Puberty and Relationships.

Our integration of learning technologies in all KLA’s gives all students access to current technology such as interactive whiteboards, and our senior students are involved in  "Learning In a Technology Rich Environment" (LITRE), an initiative which gives them access to online learning on a daily basis. We also use learning technology to assist our students with learning difficulties. St Joseph’s has invested in Ipads for use in all the classrooms. We aim to expose children to a variety of learning approaches. Our teachers are constantly updating their own skills in this area.

Students at St Joseph's enjoy many opportunities to be involved in extra-curricular activities. Chess, choir, debating, public speaking and Tournament of the Minds to name just a few. We are involved in a plethora of sports throughout the school year and representative sport opportunities are available to all primary aged children.

At St Joseph's Charlestown, the staff aim to be role models and an example to the children as they prepare to meet educational and global challenges. We are preparing the whole child for life beyond primary school. St Joseph’s is a vibrant school community.

Students of St Joseph's Primary School Charlestown are encouraged to continue their Catholic education by attending St. Mary's High School, Gateshead.

The CSO is pleased to announce that it will build two new high schools and extend two existing high schools, one of the single biggest developments to be made to Catholic education in the diocese's 180 year history. Read more.
