St Joseph's Primary School recognises the traditional owners of the area, the Awabakal people.

About St Joseph's Primary School

St Joseph’s Primary School, Merewether, is a Catholic school which endeavours to evangelise and to educate students to their full potential through a partnership of home, parish and school within a vital and positive atmosphere. St Joseph’s acknowledges the Awabakal people, the traditional owners of the area and pay respect to their continuing culture.

The school was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph and has a long history of serving the Newcastle Catholic Community of St Benedict Parish. The school gathers together each day and through prayer, encourages a focus of thoughts on respect for self and others. Developing a relationship with God through prayer, music, liturgy, religious education lessons and celebrations of mass, is a foundation stone of the school.

The school motto, 'Live the Truth' is St Joseph’s goal in responding to Christ's challenge to live the Gospel. The school plays an important role in the Parish community by educating students in the history, culture and traditions of the Catholic Church as well as nurturing the development of faith. St Joseph’s strongly values Pastoral Care and encourages students in their participation in Mini Vinnies and Seasons programs.

St Joseph's supports families in their efforts to educate their children to cope with the demands of a rapidly changing world and to cater for their learning as a digital citizen. The school aims to provide an enthusiastic and friendly environment for learning; one which is safe and incorporates contemporary learning spaces that are aesthetically pleasing. The students participate in a variety of environmental programs and St Joseph’s gardening focus helps to foster an appreciation of beauty and also contributes to making the school grounds attractive.

The school provides a differentiated curriculum to cater for the individual needs of students. Technology is integrated across the curriculum and is a tool for daily teaching and learning. St Joseph's provides an opportunity for pupils to excel in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Creative Arts, including robotics, coding, dance, visual arts, drama, and music; this occurs before and after school and is also a vital part of the school curriculum. Quality learning takes place through well planned excursions; visiting performers and local service providers. The school also has an excellent concert band.

Students are given the opportunity to develop sporting skills and participate in many sporting opportunities such as netball, cricket and soccer gala days and various coaching clinics. We cater for the development of each student's confidence, self-esteem and personal development through well researched programs such as "You Can Do It."

St Joseph’s fosters positive interaction between teachers, students, parents and the Parish to provide high quality educational programs which meet the individual spiritual, academic, emotional, social and physical needs of the students. There are many opportunities for parents to become actively involved in school life. Students are enrolled from a number of areas including The Junction, Merewether, Bar Beach, Newcastle, Cooks Hill and Hamilton South.

Students of St Joseph's Primary School, Merewether, are encouraged to continue their Catholic education by attending St Pius X High School, Adamstown.
