About St Michael's Primary School

St Michael’s Primary School, Nelson Bay is a systemic school within the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle that caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 6 and offers high quality education supported by excellent facilities and 21st century technology.

Located in a beautiful bushland setting, the school focuses on quality learning experiences that will nurture and challenge students to exceed their potential in an innovative and inclusive environment.

St Michael’s offers a range of internal and external opportunities for students to develop and nurture their sporting abilities. Students have the opportunity to compete at representative levels in swimming, cross country, athletics, netball, tennis, soccer, rugby league, rugby union and touch football. Students also participate in local gala days on the Peninsula, as well as enjoying visits to the school from tennis and golf professionals. Specialist coaches also come into the school for gymnastics, athletics and a variety of sport skills.

For the creative arts, students are provided with opportunities to participate in dance workshops, learn a musical instrument through onsite private tuition, showcase their individual talents via school talent quests and audition for ASPIRE. A well-developed music program called the ‘Music Room’ ensures that each student can build upon their skills by being taught in a sequential manner. A school eisteddfod is also available for students to showcase their dance and drama skills.

Students and parents have access to the latest digital learning tools, with parents empowered to become actively involved in their child’s education by accessing online communication about their child’s everyday learning achievements through mobile phone apps. All students have access to interactive SMART Boards, laptops, desktops and iPads in their classrooms, wireless internet throughout the school, as well as video conferencing facilities and Apple Airplay.

Winning the Port Stephens Council Environmental Awards in the curriculum category, St Michael’s also encourages students to take responsibility for the natural environment. Students have the opportunity to be part of the Gardening Club where they are taught how to plant, grow and take care of seasonal vegetables, whilst ensuring the sustainability of the natural environment. They also learn skills in recycling and composting and have the opportunity to see themselves as ‘producers’, providing valuable food sources to the school canteen and parent community.

Students at St Michael’s are actively involved in the ‘Mini Vinnies’ program and engage in visitations to the local aged care facilities during the Easter and Christmas periods. St Michael’s promotes active citizenship within the local community, evidenced by the large number of students who gather to participate in community commemorative services and celebrations such as Anzac Day and Carols at the Bay.

Students of St Michael's Primary School, Nelson Bay are encouraged to continue their Catholic education by attending San Clemente High School, Mayfield. From 2021, students from St Michael’s will be able to continue their secondary education to Year 12 at the brand new Catherine McAuley Catholic College, Medowie.
